ENGLISH FOR THE YOUNG LEARNERS

- THE YOUNG LANGUAGE LEARNERS

Divided into two :

1. 5-7 years old (level one/the beginner level)

General character :

§ They can talk what they are doing

§ They can tell you what they have done or heard

§ They can plan activities

§ They can argue for something and they you why they thing and what they thing

§ They can use logical reasoning

§ They can use their vivid imagination

§ They know that the world is governed by rules

§ They use their language skills long before they aware of them

§ Their understanding come through their hands, eyes and ears

§ They are very logical

§ They have a very short attention and concentration span

§ They have diffuclty in knowing fact and fiction

§ They happy playing and working alone in the company of themselves

§ They love to play, they learn best where they’re enjoying themselves

§ They very enthusiastic and positif about learning

2. 8-10 years old (level

General character :

§ Their basic concept are formed

§ They can tell the difference between fact and fiction

§ They ask questions all the time

§ They rely on spoken word as well as physical word to convey and understand meaning

§ They have definite views about what they like and don’t

§ They have a develop sense of fairness in classroom

§ They are able to work with other and learn from the others

Language Development :

§ Can understand in abstract

§ Can understand symbol

§ Generalize and systematize


- In teaching the young learner, teacher must do :

1. Words are not enough

Most activiteise should include movement and involve the senses. Need plenty of object and pictures to work with

2. Play with the language

Let them talk to themselves. Makes up rhymes, sing songs, tell stories

3. Language as language

Becoming aware of language, the spoken word accompanied by other close meaning, facial ekspression movement, etc

4. Variety in classroom

Variety is a must include variety of activity, pace, organization, voice, etc

5. Routinities

Have systems, have routines, organized and plan lessons

6. Cooperation not competition

Avoid reward and prizes other form of encouragement more effective

7. Grammar

Children have an amazing ability to absorb language through play and other activities

8. Assesment

Useful to make regular notes about each child’s progress


- CLASS MANAGEMENT AND ATMOSPHERE :

· Teacher criterion of young learners :

1. Have good personalities

o Have a good sense of humor

o Open minded

o Adaptable

o Patient

o creative

2. Have many abilities

o Able to sing

o Able to play music

o Able to draw picture

3. Have an attitude

Respect your pupils and be realistic about what they can manage


· Helping children to feel secure :

With secure and feeling content they can be encouraged to become independent and adventurous in learning language


How to help the feel secure :

o Know what you’re doing Respect your pupils

o Let them speak and talking although it mistakes as well

o Establish routines

o Give the children responsibility for ding practical job in classroom

o Avoid organized competition

o Avoid giving physical reward and prizes

o Don’t give children English names


· The physical surrounding :

Young children respond well to pleasant and familiar surrounding :

- Put as much on the walls as you can like calendars, posters, postcard, etc

- Have interest object like animals

- Encourage them to bring in object/picture etc


· Arranging desk

1. Arrangement a

- You can teach the whole class easily

- You can have groupwork for the some of the time

- Lets do pairwork easily

- Leaves space to you for more general activities

2. Arrangement b

- You can easily do pairwork

- Its not encourage natural communication

3. Arrangement c

- Same like B

- Leaves you space in the middle of classroom


· Groups the children

a. Pairwork

Is very useful and efficient way of working ing language teaching

· Let them sitting near each other

· Establish a routine for pairwork

b. Groupwork

Pairwork applies groupwork. We cant put children into groups, give them an exercise and assume that it all work.

· Introducing groupworks

· Limit numbers group 2-5 pupil

· Not let them choose their groups

· Classroom language

Classrom language is the tool in a way to help pupils progress

What should you do to help thems :

*do remember word : please thank you, etc

*have a picture a dictionary to help them

*try to speak English

For example word :

Good morning/Good Afternoon

Goodbye

Can i…. please

Sorry I don’t know

Its my……/her/his/yours
